Shahck Out Speak Out was a project ran by RJC Dance funded by Leeds Community Foundation, with 57 Youth Provision members, addressing mental health inequalities in minority ethnic groups. Our young people developed confidence and skills to manage their mental health.
These workshops provided a safe and supportive space to learn more about mental health, recognise and talk about their emotions, and develop practical tools to support their wellbeing. The sessions helped to reduce stigma around mental health, build confidence in asking for support and encourage young people to take an active role in looking after their emotional wellbeing.
Yoga provided an opportunity to slow down, focus on the present moment and connect their physical and mental wellbeing, taking place at RJC Dance in Leeds. Through breathing, movement and relaxation exercises, we were able to develop strategies for managing stress, releasing tension and finding moments of calm. Taking part together also encouraged positive relationships and created a supportive environment.
Our trip to Leeds Playhouse to see Pied Piper by Battersea Beatbox Academy supported our members’ mental health by providing an opportunity to experience live theatre, music and creative expression outside of their usual routine. The experience encouraged imagination, self-expression, confidence and positive connections, while also contributing towards their Arts Award qualification by giving members the opportunity to reflect on and discuss the performance, develop their creative thinking and celebrate their achievements.
Our visit to Herd Farm provided the opportunity to step outside of usual routines and take part in activities that encouraged teamwork, confidence and resilience. Building dens required communication, creativity and problem-solving, while the giant swing and assault course provided opportunities for members to challenge themselves, overcome nerves and celebrate their achievements.
Our trip to Clapham and Ingleborough Caves gave members the opportunity to spend time in nature, explore a new environment and take on a physical challenge together. Led by Jamila and Pippa, National Parks Champions, the hike and cave experience encouraged perseverance, confidence and a sense of achievement as members supported one another throughout the day. Being outdoors and away from everyday routines also provided an opportunity to relax, connect with peers and enjoy positive shared experiences. Working together to navigate the challenges of the day helped to build self-esteem and develop a greater sense of belonging.
Go Ape Temple Newsam gave our members the opportunity to challenge themselves, try something outside of their comfort zone and celebrate their achievements. Completing activities at height required courage, perseverance and trust, helping young people to develop confidence and resilience. Encouraging one another throughout the experience also strengthened peer relationships and created a positive sense of achievement and belonging.
We are incredibly proud of everything our members have achieved through Shahck Out Speak Out and are grateful to Leeds Community Foundation and all of our partners and collaborators who have helped make this work possible.
“I enjoyed the whole experience of Shahck Out Speak Out 2026 because you learn a bunch of new skills, activities and meet new people. Shahck Out Speak Out teaches others and me the importance of mental health and how it affects your well being. They teach you to care for everyone around you. I learnt to try new things that I wouldn’t try before” – Youth Provision Member
As we look ahead, we hope to continue creating opportunities where young people feel heard, supported, connected and empowered to speak out about their mental health.
