RJC Dance Exhibition Celebrating Cultural Heritage to Open During Black History Month 

RJC Dance will be launching a physical and digital exhibition celebrating our 30th anniversary and the cultural legacy we have had on the local Black British and African Caribbean and culturally diverse communities. The exhibition, which launches during Black History Month on 25th October at the Reginald Centre Community Hub in Chapeltown, Leeds, combines photography, video footage and costumes from our archives. Funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the project also encompasses intergenerational workshops throughout October and November to engage the community in Black culture and heritage.

The exhibition features inspiration from our winning troupe Natrobeat, at this year’s Leeds West Indian Carnival, which used sustainable, natural materials for the costumes.

Kathy Williams, MBE, OLY, Director of RJC Dance shares her thoughts: “As we look back on the last 30 years and see the impact and value our service has had on the children, young people and families in this community and beyond, we also look ahead to the generation to come. Natrobeat is about recognising our environmental responsibility to protect the planet for our next generation – that’s the cultural legacy we want to leave behind. We’re delighted that we’ve received support from the Heritage Fund to begin this work and to deliver and share this important project, thanks to National Lottery players.”

Members of the public are welcome to attend the exhibition in person at the Reginald Centre Community Hub, Chapeltown, Leeds from Wednesday 25th October to Monday 13th November 2023. Entry is free, and no booking is required.
